Winners of Lafayette Farmers Market Scarecrow Contest

Sue Raney was the winner of the 2009 Lafayette Farmers Market Scarecrow Contest. Sue sells fruits and vegetables produced from Raney Farms in Cutler, Indiana at the market. As the first place winner, Sue will receive a free reserved vending space at the 2010 Market. Second place winner, Shryll Heichelbech who makes and sells handbags and jewelry under the Vendor name Bags N Beads, received a gift certificate for dinner for two from Red Seven. Third place winner, Attica native Mark Borders, who with his wife Marla, sells produce, plants and herbs, received a gift certificate from Puccini’s. Nine vendors chose to create a scarecrow to be entered in the popular contest, which is one of the special events planned during the Lafayette Farmers Market season. Scarecrows included President Obama and his family and also the Wizard of Oz with Dorothy on the yellow brick road. The public was invited to vote for their favorite display while visiting the market which is ripe with the last tastes of summer and bursting with fall treats. Several vendors also decorated their booths and distributed treats to children of all ages. Squash, pumpkins, Indian corn, onions, gourmet dog biscuits, kettle corn, meats, free range farm fresh eggs, fall flowers, honey, dried herbs, baked goods, and farm related arts/crafts are among the products now available at the Market. The market is open on Tuesdays and Saturdays from 7:30 am – 12:30 pm and on Thursdays from 4:00 pm-7:00 pm through October. The market is located in Downtown Lafayette on Fifth Street between Main and Columbia Streets.
